Apesar de pouco comum, uma infecção intestinal provocada pela bactéria Clostridium difficile, capaz de colonizar o trato digestivo do ser humano em situações em que a flora normal tenha sido alterada pelo uso de antibióticos, provoca forte diarreia que, em casos graves, só pode ser tratada através de um procedimento eficaz, mas bastante incomum: o transplante de fezes.
O transplante de fezes é realizado inserindo o material de pessoas saudáveis no intestino do paciente infectado por via anal ou nasal. A técnica consiste na aplicação de cápsulas de fezes congelada e são alojadas no cólon intestinal das pessoas doentes. Outro método é realizado através de sonda, com fezes diluídas em água salgada ou soro fisiológico.
